About the Event
This training will begin with an overview of what special education is, eligibility criteria, and the types of services available. The rest of the presentation will focus on how to prepare for Individualized Education Plan meetings and what to do afterwards including when parents disagree with the school district.
Speaker -
Alexander Scarlis – CRA
Alex is a Clients’ Rights Advocate who works with Eastern Los Angeles Regional Center consumers and their families to advocate for the civil rights of people with developmental disabilities. Alex believes OCRA’s work is crucial to ensuring people with developmental disabilities live as independently as possible. Prior to working for OCRA, Alex represented people with disabilities in negotiations and appeals against state vocational rehabilitation agencies as an advocate in the Massachusetts Office on Disability.
Alex double-majored in Journalism and Political Science at Northwestern University and holds a Master of Public Policy from Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management.
